In search of a good laugh

November 23rd, 2009 by Lorraine

It's hard to find comedy shows in Hawaii. Unless you buy tickets to the mainland import artist concerts, Frank DeLima does a Mother's Day special show, or Augie T. performs at the Kapolei High School cafeteria, good, live comedy is hard to come by.

I hear Pipeline Cafe has a Wednesday night show. But since we are working, parenting type people, going out for social reasons on a Wednesday night is not much of an option.

That leaves two choices that I've been able to find: Laugh Track Theater and Hawaii Comedy Theater. We enjoyed our evening at Laugh Track Theater a few months ago and decided to check out the other one on Saturday night. So, once again, we ventured forth from Kapolei.

Hawaii Comedy Theater can be found in Waikiki in the Princes Kaiulani Hotel. It offers two shows: The Polynesian Review at 8 pm and Sharkey's Comedy Theater at 9:30 pm. The first show costs $25, the second one is $15. There's a combo price as well as a 20% Kamaaina discount for each. We chose the second one so we could have dinner and walk around a bit before the show.

The logistics surrounding Hawaii Comedy Theater are excellent. Their website is easy to use and very informative. I called to clarify some information and the woman I spoke with was quite helpful and pleasant.

Parking is at the hotel, easy to find (especially with the excellent directions on the website) and it costs $2 with validation. It is good for six hours making it easy to spend a full evening in Waikiki.

The show needs work. Mostly it needs customers. There were 12 whole people in the audience. The room seats about 100, so what might seem intimate in a smaller venue was simply awkward in this one.

There were three comedians who did stand up acts of increasing funniness. The last guy was definitely the funniest. He could do well, given a stronger venue and more of an audience.

I forgot my camera so I took a photo after the show with the first and third comedians. I wish I could remember their names or it was posted on the website or in the flyer I took home.

There is definitely potential there. It's a great location, reasonable price, and parking is convenient. The earlier show might be more crowded and more funny. Bo Irvine headlines for that one. That will be our next order of business, to check that one out.

Any other suggestions?

    Hi Lorraine,

Have you ever listened to Rodney Villanueva do live comedy or MC a party? He is totally funny-- just as long as you're not the butt of his jokes. I'm not too sure where he performs, but I know that last UH football season he did some stand-up after the games at Ige's Restaurant.

If you ever go and see him, let me know how you liked it.

Take care and have a great Thanksgiving.

I'll have to check it out. Mahalo Happy Thanksgiving to you too. I hope you enjoy your break. I know you deserve it.
