It's never too early to be thankful

November 26th, 2009 by Lorraine

Our holiday celebration started early. Yesterday I joined my husband for the Tripler Army Medical Center Warrior Transition Battalion's Warrior Appreciation Day at the Porter Recreation Center on Schofield Barracks.

They had all kinds of fun activities planned for the soldiers and their families.

I got there just in time to hear several contestants in the WTB Idol contest. This competition will continue on to the next event on December 18 at the Tropics (also on Schofield Barracks,) and culminating again at the Tropics on New Year's Eve with prizes for the winners.

We were also treated to a dance performance in the small theater by the squad leaders. There was even popcorn for the audience.

The Porter Recreation Center is a beautiful facility for the residents of the Porter housing area on Schofield. There's a grassy park with a play structure and water play area. The WTB brought in a bouncer as well. Besides the theater there's a nice lanai, a kitchen and restrooms. It's a perfect place for a party.

Unfortunately I missed two of the more exciting activities. They held a game of musical chairs mixed with a scavenger hunt in which my husband participated. I was told that it bordered on hilarious.

After I left, the pie throwing contest convened. It was also a fundraiser for the Battalion. The highest bidders got to throw pies in the faces of their leaders. Squad Leaders, First Sargeants, Platoon Sargeants, Company Executive Officers, the Batallion Command Sargeant Major, and the Battalion Commander participated. My husband got the highest bidder. Somebody paid $300 to throw that pie! I'm sorry I missed it.

But I did stay for lunch, which was provided by Hooters. They really are a class act, always finding ways to help the community. They have stepped up to the proverbial plate for the Rotary Club of Kapolei's Taste at Kapolei and Evening at Lanikuhonua for the past few years. It was nice to see them with the WTB as well.

I took a picture of my husband with these Hooters Ladies so he could tell me what a great wife I am. He also took a picture with me, which was a very wise move on his part!

It was a great way to kick off the weekend. The soldiers, their families and staff came together in mutual appreciation making a positive statement about how much we have to be thankful for.
