The busy season
December 2nd, 2009 by LorraineMy car broke down on Monday and I spent the whole day attending to that. But it actually turned out to be a nice day spent in Kapolei.
I got stuck at the Goodwill donation center in Kapolei near Ace Hardware. After dropping off my donations I tried to start the car and it was completely dead.
A lady I know from Kids Hurt Too was driving by and saw me stuck there. She stopped to help, but neither of us had jumper cables. I called my friend Catherine who was there with hers in a jiffy. Between the three of us and a nice man who was walking by who offered to help, we determined that there was no hope.
My USAA automobile insurance has free roadside service so I called them and they sent out a truck from Elijah's towing.
It gave us enough time to walk over to Starbucks and have coffee and breakfast and talk story for a while. I couldn't have planned it better.
We also became friendly with the Goodwill lady who was very nice about the whole thing considering my car was blocking access to her place. Car after car pulled up to drop off stuff. She said that this was the busiest day that she had ever seen. Perhaps I was good for business. Or perhaps the rest of the town, like me, cleaned out their garages over the long Thanksgiving weekend.
Then we met Matt from Elijah's Towing. He sat in traffic for an hour trying to get to Kapolei. Of course he had the car started in a minute, did not laugh at me and followed me to Goodyear Kapolei.

They were incredibly busy as well, predicting over an hour wait which actually turned into to two. I figured I'd walk around, visit my friend Barbara who works at the bank and find other ways to kill time. Luckily, another friend drove by and we went to Chili's for lunch.
By the time we were done eating, my car was ready. As I was walking over to pick it up, I saw my friend Nami from Ko Olina who offered me a ride. While I declined, it sure felt good to know I am not alone in Kapolei,
What could have been a very frustrating and uncomfortable day, turned out to be quite pleasant. I had breakfast and lunch out with friends, shopped, went to the bank, met some new people and was reminded that we have a very nice community here in Kapolei.

I agree, what could have been a huge hassle of a day seemed to turn out really nicely. That's what I love about our communities here in Hawaii--lots of friends and family literally on every corner that help make our lives richer, happier, and easier.
